In 2000, countries around the world signed up to the specific, time-bound targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), creating a global partnership against poverty and inequality. Africa in particular faces considerable challenges which can be overcome if developed nations fulfil their commitments and African leaders keep the promises they have made to their citizens.
Making those commitments visible is a key step to their delivery. Without transparency there is no accountability. And without accountability, achievements to date are reduced to ambitious rhetoric, of little benefit to Africa's poor and marginalised.
Commit4Africa is an on-line, searchable database of commitments made by heads of state and government representatives under the auspices of international institutions and groupings. These commitments have been extracted directly from the original declarations and coded to enable searching by multiple criteria. Summaries of all the commitments made in a declaration can be generated, and original documentation can be quickly accessed.
